I deserve it.

I write this post spouting my own opinions on marriage. A few hours later, I sit down to watch the Marriage Ref for the first time.

You’ve seen the previews.  It’s the new show from Jerry Seinfeld, who recruited celebrities —who take turns sitting on the panel.

I didn’t watch the first episode last week.  It featured my guy  Alec Baldwin;  I didn’t want to risk seeing a show that could ruin his appeal.

This time the couples embroiled in disputes are getting advice from those noted marriage experts:  Ricky Gervais.  Larry David.  And Madonna.

Need I say more?

If you haven’t seen the show, don’t worry—- I can’t possibly spoil it.

This is quite a trio…. I’m willing to hear their thoughts on marriage.   Actually—individually and/or collectively— I’d listen to them talk about anything they want.

My main issue with the Marriage Ref isn’t the celebrities;  it’s  the contestants.  I’m thinking the same thing I always think when I watch any reality show:

What kind of people would be willing to humiliate themselves and disclose  personal and embarrassing secrets in public?

And then I realize……

……isn’t that what I’m doing here?

As I said — I deserve this.

  1. Rick in Miami says:

Ah, but there are differences. You’re not taking your clothes off in public, for one. Also, it appears you’ve set your sense of self censorship to devcon 5 (H and V never revealed), whereas the contestants have absolutely no self censorship. Finally, we, your attentive readers, want to listen to you. You have important, compelling things to share. I don’t know of anyone who wants to listen to the trash that appears on TV.

  2. I agree with Rick! It’s sad that television has become so mindless.

YOU are interesting! Why else would I be reading this?

    Hugs,

    Debi

  3. Have to say if they had Larry David and Ricky Gervais on every time, I’d watch the Marriage Ref every week.
Meanwhile, thanks to both of u–I feel a little better about spilling my guts. As for taking off my clothes in public–no one would want to watch.

Don’t have access as yet to this show but ITV in the UK has run several hours of Ricky and Larry just sitting around talking about comedy. That is when they can stop laughing at each other. So I agree with you that if it was just those two I would watch it all the time. Not sure where they they go from here, however.

  5. Pretty sure Larry/Ricky are the highlight of the Marriage Ref this season— or ever. And pretty sure what you’ve already seen in the UK is better than that.

  6. I feel a little obligated to confess that I’m not against mindless television—by the way, is that an oxymoron? Just kidding.
Also should admit that I really like a couple reality shows….but don’t plan to watch any more of the Marriage Ref unless they have Larry David on every week. Or Alec Baldwin.
