The signs from the universe were out today and I read them loud and clear.
As a social media slut, some of my favorite steadies on Twitter are women writers. One of them, Elissa Stein, had her first book published this week. Flow just arrived today—the book, not my period.
I can’t wait to read it and report back. And I suddenly realized: I often blog about movies, but rarely mention books—even though I read way more than I watch movies.
I’m not sure why that is. Lots of times I’ll finish a book, plan to write about it ….then something else pops up on my radar and I don’t.
I think that’s about to change. I also think the universe wants to be sure of it—since today, in addition to Flow, it put more reading material right on my radar.
This also comes from my online circle of friends: Susan Bearman wrote this post about the Publisher’s Weekly List of the Best books of 2009-– which did not include a single book by a woman writer.
Not only do I totally agree with Susan, but in her post, she also recommends four books by women writers this year—which I’m planning to order immediately.
And last but not and least….one more book in the news today….
And this one, I am NOT going to buy.
I’m also not going to mention the name of the author. A sneak peek and some excerpts were just released tonight — about her relationship with the McCain campaign and her interview with Katie Couric….containing absolutely nothing worth reading and nothing everyone didn’t already know.
But go ahead —I bet you want to read the excerpts anyway.
I did, too.

After becoming a writer, artist, TV journalist, mother and breast cancer survivor----I realize nothing turns out the way we expect. So I blog about handling the big and little things — with humor, humanity, and hope.

Oh, I know just the book you mean. It’s like a car wreck. You know it’s going to be bad. You don’t want to look, but … there’s something perversely tempting. I’m so glad you’re going to order my peeps books: Invisible Sisters and This Lovely Life are both wrenching, beautifully written memoirs. S is for Story is a great picture book about and for writers of all ages. And Haven is a wonderful YA novel by a brilliant new talent. Enjoy and let me know what you thing.
Now this is what you call viral. So glad we’re speaking up and making noise, and glad Invisible Sisters is a part of that.
PS I’m twittering you now!
Can’t wait to see what/if you blog about California’s Ms. Prejean. Another literary genius to be sure!
Without bloggers like you and Susan, I would be completely oblivious to news items like this – thanks for bringing it to everyone’s attention!
And I am humbled to have my book and myself mentioned as one of 2009′s best:)
Double thanks with a cherry on top!

Thank u—now people will get why I LOVE connecting with women writers!
PS Carrie Prejean is on my radar–but couldn’t quite make the leap to describe her as a writer.
Thanks for connecting me with one woman writer this week – I just got a lovely note with a copy of Kristy Kiernan’s last book, and am on the list for an ARC of her next! I’m also following @elissastein and her blog thanks to you, but I don’t think she’s noticed yet. Flow sounds great, though, and would fit very well with the women’s-studies reading challenge, Women Unbound, that I’m participating in during the next year.
And yes, you totally need to blog more about books
.
Thank U–glad you connected with some of my social media steadies. And you’re great inspiration to blog about books.
Also the universe was tuning into my frequency even more than I realized: Today is Call to Action Day on SheWrites.com, a wonderful community for women who write—based on the exclusion of women from Publisher’s Weekly Top 10 List. http://www.shewrites.com/
