Somewhere between the blogosphere and real life. That’s my current Facebook status which I wrote when I was going to BlogHer. (By the way this is NOT my post about BlogHer. Still haven’t done it yet. This is a sidebar. )
Mostly I’ve been immersed in real life—in Daniel and his life in Madison. I love entering his college world and seeing why he’s so happy here. And while he’s in class or work I’ve had a chance to connect with friends from cyberspace—without even touching a computer.
As part of the fastest growing demographic on Facebook, I’ve rediscovered many people from my past lives—one of them ultimately became a professor at the University of Wisconsin law school AND the medical school—with an intriguing specialty in bioethics—applying our laws to the brave new world opened up by science. Without Facebook I never would have had the chance to meet his wife, visit his home, catch up on personal and professional lives since our last contact which took place in high schol 40 years ago.
By contrast, Kathleen and I have no common history—yet we found much in common over coffee. Two hours flew by exchanging ideas, stories and even a few tears—-before this conversation we’d only exchanged maybe 900 characters on Twitter. I didn’t even know her last name until we met.
Between the blogosphere and real life. Turns out that’s a pretty good place to be.

I agree; I’m “meeting” the nicest people.
And you really got to meet some.
It’s great that facebook has been able to reconnect you to real people. I know, I love it.
Meeting new friends and reconnecting with old ones is truly the best part of the brave new world of the internet. Only wish we’d had it as an ongoing part of our lives like our kids will.
