When Shane is deployed, it’s good news/bad news. The bad news is that he’s in Iraq; the good news is that while he’s gone, Alli comes back to live in California.

Last time Shane was in Iraq for a year, Alli lived 15 miles from me.  This time she’ll be in southern California, where she’ll be closer to her dad.

I headed down south too, to see Alli and help set up her new apartment.  Always an adventure when you put together two drama queens both deficient in the domestic department.

And since Daniel is also in So. Cal visiting his dad before returning to Wisconsin, this means an event at the top of my list, something that lately feels as rare as a solar eclipse— seeing both my kids at the same time.

  1. I know; now that my kids are older the times when I get to be with all of them at once are so incredibly precious.
All those times we’re overwhelmed when they’re little we just have no idea…

    Daryl—
That pic of Allie and Shane (from “goodbye again” Is priceless…you can FEEL the love between them.
Thank you very much for sharing…
my best wishes to you and your kids….

  3. I remember all the people who told me to enjoy every minute because it goes so fast–now I hear myself saying the same thing.

It’s so odd how that feels. I really think it is the bird brain. I have four children. There is really nothing in the world like having them all together under one roof. When they first started dispersing, and then came back together — I could not account for the extraordinary happiness I felt.

I don’t really understand it; it is too deep in my chicken unconscious. I only know I crave that feeling of euphoria when all my chicks are gathered in.

Lovely for you to have them both, sometimes, even though it means Shane is far away.

  5. Didn’t realize you had 4 kids! Also think you’re right about the bird brain–and it’s primal. Seems as if most mothers feel the same way about having all their chicks safely in the nest.
